shall be glad to be informed as to how far you were

able to accomplish this, and whether you can obtain

from the same source the cost of the maintenance of

Miss Garrett at Hong Kong. It appears to me very de-

sirable that you should do so, if possible.

I understand from Mr. Bourne that he has heard

from you that Miss Garrett is a native of Hull in

England and that she is believed to have a brother

(a baker) and a step-sister, living in Hull, but that

they are probably not in a position to bear any part

of the expenses referred to.

If you are unable to obtain repayment in Amoy

of the cost of her maintenance in Hong Kong, you

should endeavour to ascertain the address of the bro-

ther and step-sister in Hull, that application may be

made to them from the Foreign Office, if it is thought

desirable.
